multiple tours in iraq and afghanistan. since 2010, he protected american diplomatic personnel in dangerous posts from central america to the middle east. he had the hands of a healer as well as the arms of a warrior. earning distinction as a registered nurse and certified paramedic. our hearts go out to to his wife and his three sons. along with his grieving family, friends, and colleagues. glen doherty was also a former seal and an experienced paramedic. he died protecting his colleagues. he was employed to some of the most dangerous places on earth, including iraq and afghanistan, always putting his life on to safeguard other americans. our thoughts and prayers are with his father, his mother, his brother, and sister, and their grieving families, friends, and colleagues. i was honored to know ambassador chris stevens. i want to thank his parents and siblings who are here today for sharing chris with us and with their country. what a wonderful gift you gave us. over his distinguished career in the foreign service, he won friends to the united states in far-flung places. he made those peop

it would be about iraq. on september 15, the world financial markets froze. everything became about the economy. we thought that this risk would be about the economy and not the personalities of the candidate. i wonder if what is happening in the middle east will turn into something much larger from now until election day. it can never tell exactly what it is that will create the context on election day. that might turn out to be a much bigger deal than we ever thought it would be. >> i was taught that their campaigns for operating on multiple levels. i wrote about how campaigns could e-books and really -- evolve and really committed differently with one household than their neighbors. a campaign can have a discussion with a set of individuals and across demographic individuals. the day to day big news story we are talking about does not necessarily where the companiocn is devoting their resources. there was back and forth yesterday about egypt and libya. obama was spending his money talking to people in ohio about what mitt romney was talking to people in florida about. be aware th

not try to nation build. i supported it, i supported our efforts when we went into iraq because i felt we had to get rid of saddam hussein and i felt we had to stop the movement of radical islam in its tracks. and i thought democracy would be a good thing there. but if you look at what's happened, the democracy there is -- although it's a fledgling democracy it's very rocky, and they are very close to iran. they have met with the iranian leaders, ahmadinejad, and so this nation building we did in iraq right now i think is still tenuous. i'm not sure it's going to work out. we spent billions and billions and maybe trillions of dollars over there and lost a lot of lives. and then in informing -- afghanistan, i support going after the taliban, i think we ought to get rid of those guys, we ought to stop the terrorists, it's extremely important, but the one thing that i think is very important when we go after these guys is we make absolutely sure that we are going to get them and we are going to win. and the problem we have with afghanistan after losing all these lives and costing all this mo

was the corporate manager in iraq. he called a commander to ask and to help put together a training program for the iraqis. he said we are not interested. that bothers me. do iss a good -- what we not all trigger pulling. i think you are right on the mark. i think there needs to be a policy review. on what they can share. they need really strong public officers that can deal with what we do. for one thing, staying totally black, during things that might just be outside of what the american people would really go along with. one of the points they made was interesting. the can bring in someone with cultural understanding, a language, but they have to fit in with the personalities. one of the things they do, and we ought to think about doing this, and a psychiatrist's on their staff. people are interviewed. if people do not have what is considered to be the mindset that is needed to do the job, they are not considered. they do not take them. we ought to do something like that for the kind of folks that you are proposing to get into the afghan pande. a new drug the right to buy and set it seem

for not being forthcoming. remember that there was the war in iraq. there was a strong push on the part of the europeans, especially britain, germany, and france not to go to the security council because they saw iran going the way of iraq. going to the security council would be a mandate for war. countries like france had been at odds with the united states over iraq and did not want to be at odds with the u.s. over iran, but wanted to stop the united states from doing what it did to iraq. we had a dramatic event where the foreign ministers of germany, in october, 2003, struck an agreement where i rran would embark on uranium enrichment. it is the ultimate in dual use technology. it had the united states stepping back and britain, germany, and france became known as the eu3. 2004, iran wentto doesn't f along with this saying they would also be a part of uranium enrichment. eu3 wasoesn't buy, submitting a proposal to iran promising help for its program. this is where you get another big in the. me. the eu3 was unable to do anything because the and the states was not there. they looked o
